Monday proved bittersweet for Col. Richard A. Klumpp Jr., commander of the 71st Flying Training Wing, as he took his traditional “finis flight.”
The sweet came in a trip to Colorado in a T-1, complete with a stop for nine holes of golf at one of the country’s top golf courses.
The bitter came with the knowledge that, barring another command assignment in a flying environment, Monday’s sortie could, indeed, be finis for Klumpp.
“This could very well be my last flight in the Air Force, and definitely it’s the last T-1 flight,” Klumpp said. read more...

The ties between Vance Air Force Base, and northwest Oklahoma, are clearly reflected in the figures atop the Pioneers Past, Present and Future, monument unveiled June 26 in downtown Enid.
The monument features three one-half life-size figures — a “Boomer” who participated in the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893, a World War II aviator and an astronaut. read more...
Northwest Oklahoma, a land settled by pioneers, seemed a natural fit for Eileen Collins, a pioneer in her own right.
Collins was one of the first four women to enter pilot training at Vance Air Force Base in 1978, and was one of the first two graduates from the program the following year.
It is fitting then that it was here at Vance Air Force Base, the inspiration for Collins’ next pioneering feat was born.
Not long before Collins arrived at Vance in 1978, the first group of six women astronauts visited the base for parachute training.
“I remember reading about them in the news, and thinking, ‘These are women astronauts, that’s what I want to do someday,’” she said. read more...
