David Martinez is Hispanic on both sides of his family tree, and he’s proud of his family’s heritage and culture.
Martinez, an Air Force chaplain and captain, is senior Protestant chaplain for the 71st Flying Training Wing, at Vance AFB.
Specifically, Martinez, descends from Mexicans on both sides of his family.
But the chaplain will tell you, he is not “Mexican” in the sense most Americans use and conceive of that term.

In his book “The Art of War,” Sun Tzu, a Chinese general in the sixth century B.C., wrote “The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy’s not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have mad our position unassailable.”
Thus is the thinking behind the military's emphasis on drilling, practicing and maintaining a constant state of readiness.
One such drill, conducted Monday at Vance Air Force Base, involved a scenario in which a deadly threat was unleashed.
A team of 12 drawn from Vance’s 71st Medical Group had to set up a decontamination tent and demonstrate the facility was fully operational, as well as donning “Gumby” suits, or Level C hazmat suits.
Their goal was to accomplish these tasks within 20 minutes. read more...
