When Col. Rod Gillis was going through ROTC at Troy State University in the late 1970s, he was preparing to enter a “hollow” Air Force, one that, because of cutbacks during the Carter administration, was undermanned and underfunded.
Fast forward to today, and the Air Force from which Gillis is preparing to retire is at the forefront of the global war on terror.
“It’s been a remarkable change for the military,” said Gillis, vice commander of 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance Air Force Base. read more...

VANCE AIR FORCE BASE — Team Vance is recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month as part of the overall Department of Defense effort to educate its members about sexual assault-related topics and not to tolerate these behaviors.
In 2005, the Air Force stood up the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office as the focal point for sexual assault related issues, and each base established a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator. read more...

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — An Air Force training jet crashed at Columbus Air Force Base on Wednesday, killing both pilots aboard, base officials said.
The base said in a news release the T-38C Talon crashed about 12:30 p.m., and the pilots’ names were being withheld until relatives could be notified. read more...
