Strong Showing Lt. Col. Andre Johnson, an Air Force reservist assigned as a T-38 Talon instructor pilot to the 5th Flying Training Squadron at Vance Air Force Base, competed at the National Masters Weightlifting Championship held in Savannah, Ga., April 4-6. He made six of six attempts and received the bronze medal for his age group 45-49 and weight group of 231 pounds. This made him eligible to compete in the Pan American Masters Championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 11-13. Johnson has been lifting weights since he was 15 years old, and was a member of the winning U.S. team that competed against the Canadians in 1979. He qualified for the 1980 Olympic tryouts, which were canceled due to a U.S. boycott of the games in Moscow that summer. (Courtesy photo)

Randall Schmedthorst, instructor pilot with the 3rd Fighter Training Squadron, changed station in February from Hill Air Force Base, Utah. to Vance Air Force Base, making a trip he planned to visit family and run the eighth annual Oklahoma City Memorial Half-Marathon much shorter. Early in the morning on Apr. 27, wearing garbage bags atop his running gear against heavy rain and wind, Schmedthorst ran under a seven-minute mile in wet shoes. Earthquake relief supplies from the United States are unloaded May 18 at the Shuangliu International Airport in Chengdu, China.
