Enid, it is safe to say, loves having Vance Air Force Base here.
The base is a boon to Enid’s economy, since it is the county’s largest employer.
The base also brings to town highly educated and highly motivated Air Force personnel from all over the country, enriching Enid in a number of ways.
Couple these facts with the knowledge Vance plays a vital role in the defense of our country as well as the global war on terror, and it is safe to say most people in the Enid area have a soft spot in their hearts for Vance.
But there is such a thing as loving a base to death.
Eric Benson, Enid’s city manager, knows this all too well.
In the late-1990s, Benson, then a Navy captain, was commander of Naval Air Station Oceana, located in Virginia Beach, Va.
During the 2005 BRAC round, Oceana was targeted for closure because of encroachment around the base that hampered the training of young aviators.
To keep Vance Air Force Base from suffering a similar fate, Enid adopted measures establishing an Airfield Environs Overlay District in the 1970s, and periodically studies and updates the ordinances. read more...
