The Air Force core value, “service before self,” was very much on display March 26 as Vance Air Force Base hosted the annual Area VI Special Olympics.
Some 250 military and civilian volunteers from Vance worked to make the day truly special for the 218 athletes from 14 teams in Garfield, Grant and Kay counties, despite the cold, gloomy weather.
“To see the joy it brings to the athletes, it pays off,” said Holly Eckstein, volunteer coordinator for the event and a budget analyst for the 71st Comptroller-Contracting Squadron.
Recruiting volunteers to help with Special Olympics, which has become an annual fixture at the base, is an easy task, Eckstein said.

Maj. Alan Brown rides a stationary bicycle at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. Brown is an amputee C-130 Hercules pilot deployed with the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron from the 187th Airlift Squadron of the Wyoming Air National Guard. He lost his leg in a hunting accident 10 years ago, and after seven years he regained his qualifications to fly.
