On weekends, Vance Air Force Base is quiet, going into what 71st Flying Training Wing commander Col. Chris Nowland calls “Sleepy Hollow mode.”
That all will change this fall with the opening of Armed Forces Reserve Center being built on the south end of the base.
Construction is ahead of schedule for the $18.7 million facility, which will feature a 60,000-square-foot training building and 9,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance building, known as Organizational Maintenance Shop.

Staff Sgt. Jessica Wilson, with the 71st Flying Training Wing Chapel staff, was named Outstanding Chaplain Assistant Airman in the Air Education and Training Command for 2009.
Wilson, who came to Vance Air Force Base out of tech school six years ago, was selected for the award based on her work in the Vance and Enid communities and her efforts during a six-month deployment to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, last year.

Shrove Tuesday Matthew, 2, and his sister, Kendall, 3, attend the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper prepared by the Vance Air Force Base Chapel staff. More than 100 attended the event, which was held in Community Chapel Activity Center Tuesday. In addition to pancakes, waffles and fixings, carnival games and a bouncy house were available for the families participating in the event.
