ENID, Okla. — Enid LGBTQ+ Coalition is hosting a community hygiene supply drive for those in need, with collection boxes available at six Enid locations through July 20.
Ramon Nunez, executive director of Enid LGBTQ+ Coalition, said coalition members undertook the drive after hearing reports of the need for personal hygiene items among low income families and the homeless population in Enid.
After several changes in the coalition's leadership, Nunez said its members wanted to be more visible as a community service organization that reaches beyond the LGBTQ community.
"We're looking forward to getting back out into the community," Nunez said. "We want to use our platform to help members of the community in need, not just members of the LGBTQ community, but all in the city of Enid who are in need."
Toward that end, the coalition is collecting hygiene items, which often are left out of donated supplies at shelters and food pantries, including soap, shampoo and conditioner, razors and shaving cream, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper and feminine hygiene items.
Collection boxes have been placed through partnerships at the following locations: city of Enid offices, 401 W. Garriott; Public Library of Enid and Garfield County, 120 W. Maine; CVS Pharmacy, 930 W. Garriott; Park Avenue Thrift, 507 S. Grand; Millennium Community Services, 312 N. Van Buren; and Salon De'fy, 2301 W. Willow.
Collections started Sunday and will continue at those locations through July 20. Nunez said collected supplies will be distributed through Enid YWCA, local schools, churches and organizations serving the homeless.
"We're trying to get as many products as we can to serve those in need," Nunez said. "We're anticipating a big turnout, and we hope a lot of people do donate."
