Volunteers still are needed for the 11th annual Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM), a free, two-day dental clinic for people of all ages, Feb. 7-8 in Stillwater.
More than 1,500 volunteer dentists, dental and clinical staff, and general volunteers of all kinds, will transform the Payne County Expo Center in Stillwater into a fully-functional dental facility, offering exams, cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals on front teeth and limited ways to improve the smile line — all at no cost to patients.
“The Oklahoma Mission of Mercy understands there are geographic, financial and educational obstacles which limit Oklahomans’ ability to access consistent and affordable dental care,” said Dr. Daniel Wilguess, Oklahoma Dental Association president and 2020 Oklahoma Mission of Mercy co-chair. “Each year, the goal of OkMOM is to alleviate these obstacles and fill a critical need in our state. I look forward to serving thousands of Oklahomans in Stillwater at the 11th annual Oklahoma Mission of Mercy, where we will provide free dental care to as many patients as time, volunteers and supplies will allow.”
OkMOM provides free dental screenings and care to approximately 1,600 patients each year, with no identification or insurance required. Since 2010, OkMOM has treated 16,138 patients, totaling more than $12 million in donated dental services, according to a press release.
Courtesy indoor line formation at OkMOM opens at 8 p.m. Feb. 6, and again at 8 p.m. Feb. 8. Treatment begins at 6 a.m. Feb. 7 and 8. Patients are advised to arrive early, as treatment is given on a first-come, first-served basis.
Volunteers are needed for the two-day event, and volunteers need not have any dental or medical training. General labor volunteers help provide various tasks such as set-up, traffic and crowd control, registration and cleanup.
